[Three notebooks], circa 1778-1789.

Manuscript, in two hands, containing serious poetry, scholarly essays, and romantic fiction. The first volume consists of an essay by Fosbrooke titled "Essay on the Characteristic differences betwixt Ancient and Modern Poetry," which won the Oxford (Newdigate) prize subject for 1789. The second volume contains a prose piece titled "An Essay on Refinement," dated 1788 and concerning the difference between ancient and modern societies. The essay is followed by a short romantic piece titled "Louisa de Valois," accompanied by a sequel, and a poem titled "On Miss Mary H...2d Dr of the Bishop of Norwich Addressed to a Friend." Dos-a-dos, the second volume also contains a piece of prose fiction concerning a 12th-century monk. The third volume contains 2 poems, "A Sketch of Nettley Abbey" and "The Chantry," both heavily corrected and annotated.
